Problems with Solutions video resource

Problems with Solutions

15 minute Video
(VHS-PAL)

This animated video explores the world of young volatile substance misusers ('sniffers').

It looks at why they might do it and considers a range of professional interventions with these young people.

Flexible

This is a flexible resource for drugs trainers and others who work with young people.

While focussing on VSA, the video has lessons for practice that are appropriate for professional workers with young people who have to deal with drug misuse of any kind.

The video features:

• realistic scenarios
• ideas for practice with young substance users
• ‘trigger’ questions to enhance viewers’ understanding
• lively and engaging animation by Ruth Lingford, whose work has been showcased at MOMI and on Channel Four
• thoughtful script by Richard Ives, an experienced and widely-published author on drugs and young people
• compelling soundtrack by Dmitri Shostakovich

The accompanying manual features:

• a synopsis of the video script and descriptions of the characters
• detailed guidance on using the trigger questions with trainees
• photocopiable pages for creating overhead projector slides.

The history of Problems with solutions

The Video was first produced as a training resource to accompany the Manual, Problems with Solutions: a manual for work with solvent sniffers and other young drug users, which was published by the Institute for the Study of Drug Dependence (ISDD – now DrugScope), with Department of Health and British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association funding.

The Manual and Video sold out and have not been available for a while. As a service to the drugs field, educari is reissuing the video.

This reissue of the Video includes the Trainer’s Manual on diskette in Word and pdf (Adobe Acrobat) format.
